Sunday 31 December 2006 – Wanaka

Trip: Queenstown - Glenorchy - Queenstown - Arthurs Point - Coronet Peak - Arrowtown - Crown Terrace - Crown Range - Cardrona - Wanaka

End Mileage: 183311

Start Mileage: 183171

Distance Travelled: 140

Slow start to the day - to make up for the two 8am ones! Market was on down on the green but the "town" itself seemed rather quiet.

Drove along the western side of Lake Wanaka to Glendhu Bay which is one HUGE camp ground. We didn't get there till 11 or so and even then there were people queuing outside the ablution blocks for showers!

Then back to Wanaka and drove back up the Crown Range road to go up the "Race to the Sky" road to go and see the monument to Possum Bourne. The road was amazing and yes we did see the obiligatory cyclist going up. The monumen itself is just incredible - the statue of Possum overlooks the race track and has stunning views of the surrounding scenery.

Oh yes, remember while this is our "summer holiday" we found snow. So of course Rex had to go throw a snow ball or two...

We also went to the Toy and Transport Museum at Wanaka airport and the Warbirds Museum.

A Standard-10:

"ForMaz Push me-Pull you" car. It is a 4 cylinder, 1490cc, 5 speed manual. Half a Ford Laser and half a Mazda 323. It was built by Chris Van Der Meys of Christchurch, who with a friend decided to put the two cars together. One front end is a 1982 Ford Laser and the other is a 1982 Mazda 323 Limited 1.5. It is a fully working car, with two complete front ends including engine and gear shifts. Goes same speed forward...or forward.

After that where else could we go back to the camp site!
